Fairwords Weekly: Communication and DEI in the Workplace
June 2, 2021
“Diversity is about all of us. That wide definition has been so helpful, because it really helps employees to know that it is about you…This is important and it requires all of us.”
— Marissa Vargas, Liberty Mutual’s VP and director of DEI strategy and planning
We’re kicking off June by highlighting several ways communication and language affect diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the workplace. We learn about how to measure inclusion in the workplace using Gartner’s new Inclusion Index. In the spirit of Pride Month, we look at a glossary of inclusive LGBTQ language and when we should use it. And, we explore whether email and Slack need to be reevaluated as the standard for workplace communication tools.
How to Measure Inclusion in the Workplace
DEI is clearly a priority for many company leaders and HR managers. A study by Gartner found that the topic was discussed in only 4% of Q2 2019 earnings calls. Just one year later, DEI came up in 40% of earnings calls. While the increased efforts are welcome, companies must find ways to measure the impact of their efforts. To help companies assess how they’re doing, Gartner created an Inclusion Index that can be used to measure baseline employee sentiment and set goals for improvement. Read the article and access the Inclusion Index.
A Helpful Glossary of LGBTQ Terms
An excellent way to support your LGBTQ colleagues is to familiarize yourself with the terms used within the communities. Language is incredibly important for communicating well, and this glossary from GLAAD breaks down common LGBTQ words, compares offensive and preferred terms, and lists defamatory terms to avoid. Check out the glossary here.
Liberty Mutual’s VP of DEI Strategy on Allyship in the Workplace
HR Dive recently conducted a Q&A with Marissa Vargas, Liberty Mutual’s VP and director of DEI strategy and planning. Vargas discussed the company’s multi-year plan to support allyship across all types of diversity. She also shared the company’s Inclusion In Action e-learning video series that is designed to teach nine inclusive communication skills. Read more about Vargas’ DEI strategy.
Email and Slack Have Locked Us in a Productivity Paradox
Over the past 20 years, work email grew from a cool productivity and connectivity tool to a time-sucking behemoth. Cal Newport, author of A World Without Email: Reimagining Work in an Age of Communication Overload, argues that newer tools such as Slack are not the answer to email abundance. Instead, he believes companies need to find ways to use these tools to communicate better, not simply to communicate more. Read more about Newport’s research.
